Childeric of Almora joins after you take his crown the sporting way. Wild Wits stages The great duel / Almor jousting tournament as a county spectacle: send a knight, win the match, and Childeric loses rulership and asks to sit at your Round Table instead. Curve Games’ launch build and August 12, 2026 community lists agree on the important negative — do not send Goberto if you want this hire.

What Childeric offers

Community sheets give him Strength 7 / Agility 4 / Charisma 4 / Magic 0 / Wits 12 / Luck 4, armor 9, level 6. That armor 9 is the highest starting plate in several launch tables — a Wits tank, not a mage.

• Resourceful — score bonus from Wits.
• Tank — score bonus from armor at quest launch.
• Paranoid (hidden) — penalty on Assassination and Help.
• Anxious (hidden) — penalty on Diplomacy and Climbing.
• Likes Diplomacy; dislikes Duel and Crowd — yes, the jouster dislikes Duels after you beat him. The writing is mean on purpose.
• Favourite meals — Crêpe and Croque-Monsieur (Cooking).
• Ending slides change with your main Act 3 ending (Endings Guide).

He is a mid-act stabilizer for Wits cards that would otherwise burn Gwendan or Oliver. He is not your Dragon Knight closer.

Step-by-step recruitment

1. Reach Act 2 far enough for the Almor jousting tournament / great duel audience to appear.
2. Pick a knight who can actually win. Community reports favour a clean Strength / Agility package — The Wolf is a frequent clean winner. Tarcus-assisted cheating shows up in some sport write-ups; treat that as a variant, not the default.
3. Do not send Goberto. Launch-week guides (Bonus Action, TposeGaming-style roundups) treat a Goberto send as the line that blocks Childeric’s ask. Goberto has his own Perfect Armour evolution tied to fighting Childeric without finishing a later Dragon-stage trial — that is a different prize. Choose which story you want before you assign.
4. Win the tournament. Entering and losing is not enough on the August 12 lists.
5. After Childeric loses rulership, accept his request to join. Leave a free seat under the Act 2 cap of eight.

A minority sheet (Grindnstrat, August 11) describes losing the duel or using Goberto as a recruit path. Later August 12 lists contradict that. If your build’s dialogue after a Goberto send offers Childeric anyway, take the seat and note the patch. If it does not, rewind and send someone else.

Joust prep

• Repair armour at Carina’s forge — Patch 1.0.8 cheapened repairs (Patch 1.0.8).
• Feed the jouster a liked meal the cycle before the match (Cooking).
• Check hidden traits with the Intendant so you do not send a Climbing-anxious knight into a stadium of people.
• Do not stack the joust on the same three cycles as Get Ligia’s lamp deadline or the Grest Pirates emergency.

Goberto versus Childeric

Goberto can become an exceptional tank if you send him at Childeric under the Perfect Armour conditions (community: fight the great duel without completing Fight the Dragon as the stage-2 trial). That path is about Goberto’s body, not Childeric’s oath. Completionists who want both the armour evolution and the Almora hire should expect a Demon rewind or a second reign (New Game Plus).

Common failures

• Sending Goberto and winning anyway — Childeric never asks.
• Losing the joust — no deposed-ruler scene.
• No free seat — eight chairs already hold secrets, Oliver, and Gideon.
• Assigning Childeric to Duels the next week — he dislikes them after you humiliated him in public.
