Sovereign Tower Annex Priority and Build Order
Forge, alchemy, stables, training grounds — what to upgrade and when
Annexes are how a sovereign in Sovereign Tower converts Treasury gold and audience favours into quest success, knight loyalty, and story unlocks. Wild Wits built each annex to scale knight effective stats, surface intendant secrets, and gate late Act 1 political threads — but only the Lady of the Tower controls which annex unlocks next. This guide ranks every annex by cycle, gives a single recommended build order for new players, and explains when to deviate for secret knights, romance paths, or the Dragon Knight ultimatum.
If you are still learning the daily loop, finish How to Play Sovereign Tower and Audience Chamber before spending gold here.
The annex roster
| Annex | Governed by | First benefit | Cycle to start |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blacksmith forge | Carina | Weapons and armor | Cycle 4 |
| Alchemy room | The Witch | Stat-buffing potions | Cycle 6 |
| Stables | Rowan | Travel modifiers (horses, mounts) | Cycle 8 |
| Training grounds | Knight Captain | Direct stat boosts | Cycle 10 |
| Intendancy tier 2 | Lady Alwena | Two scans per day | Cycle 12 |
| Royal stables tier 2 | Rowan | Mounts with sovereign reputation modifier | Cycle 16 |
| Witch library | The Witch | Late-game ritual unlocks | Cycle 22 |
| Throne room | The Lady of the Tower | Cycle 45 ending branches | Cycle 30 |
You can read the full description on Annexes and Crafting. The table above is the priority view.
Recommended first-run build order
For most new sovereigns, the forge-first → alchemy-second → stables-third sequence wins. Reasons:
- Forge tier 1 is the cheapest single-stat upgrade in the game and most knight assignments fail on Strength or Agility.
- Alchemy tier 1 unlocks reusable consumables that affect every dialogue quest — the type most often presented at audience.
- Stables tier 1 unlocks horses that fix the Goose Quest — the demo’s hardest encounter for raw-strength rosters.
- Training grounds tier 1 is the bridge into the late Act 1 power curve; do not delay past Cycle 10.
After the first three, prioritize the Intendancy tier 2 unlock because it doubles your intel and unlocks secret-knight dialogue routes. Read Intendant Guide.
When to deviate from the default order
Romance-led builds
Romance routes open earlier if you prioritise alchemy tier 1 by Cycle 4 — potions are the affinity currency for cooking + romance scenes. See Romance Guide and Cooking Guide.
Secret-knight hunters
If you plan to unlock Brunhilda before her window closes, you need the Intendancy tier 2 scan unlocked by Cycle 8. Push Intendancy ahead of stables.
If you plan to unlock Sparky, Rufus, or Silgur from the Beast Hunt, prioritise the stables tier 1 so the hunt quest modifiers route through travel — forks happen mid-quest, not at the audience.
Late Act 3 saves
If you are restarting late and want golden key + dragonheart access, skip all three of the above and put every gold piece into the training grounds until Cycle 25. The Throne room unlock at Cycle 30 only matters if all earlier storylines converge. See Golden Key Guide.
Cost-benefit table by cycle
| Cycle | Best upgrade | Treasury cost | Effective value | Why |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | Forge tier 1 | ~40 | High | Closes strength-failure traps |
| 6 | Alchemy tier 1 | ~50 | Very high | Reusable buffs every quest |
| 8 | Stables tier 1 | ~45 | High | Goose quest auto-pass |
| 10 | Training grounds tier 1 | ~55 | High | Stat math compresses |
| 12 | Intendancy tier 2 | ~60 | High | Doubles intel, secret routes |
| 14 | Forge tier 2 | ~70 | Medium | Marginal weapons upgrade |
| 16 | Royal stables tier 2 | ~70 | Medium | Travel modifiers stack |
| 18 | Alchemy tier 2 | ~75 | High | Late Act 1 potions spike |
| 22 | Witch library | ~90 | Medium | Late Act 2 unlocks |
| 30 | Throne room | ~150 | Critical | Cycle 45 ending branch |
These costs assume the Best Opening Strategy and one Demon rewind. Solo players without either see ~20% higher costs.
Patch 1.0.9 cost changes
Patch 1.0.9 (August 13, 2026) reduced a few mid-tier costs and rebalanced forge vs alchemy ratios. Specifically, alchemy tier 2 dropped ~10% and forge tier 2 dropped ~5% — net effect: alchemy tier 2 climbs the priority list for fast track players. See Patch Notes 1.0.9.
Common annex mistakes
- Maxing only forge — dialogues quests outnumber combat quests after Act 1; forge-only leaves Charisma/Wit vulnerabilities.
- Skipping stables — the goose quest locks you out of Chester and frustrates the demo progression.
- Delaying training grounds past Cycle 12 — late Act 1 spikes expect trained knights; rushing training then hurts late knight recruitment.
- Ignoring the Intendancy — second scan unlocks most secret knights. Skip at your peril.
Cross-cutting systems
Annexes feed three cross-cutting systems:
- Faction Balance Tracker (tools/faction-tracker) — annex tier ups move multiple faction lanes.
- Knight Quest Matcher (tools/quest-matcher) — matchers assume forge/alchemy tier 1 unlocks; without them, suggestions skew low.
- Cooking Guide (guides/cooking) — cooking requires the kitchen annex, not listed above because it unlocks automatically with the throne room.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Which annex should I build first?
Forge tier 1 by Cycle 4 for new players. Carina's forge is the cheapest single-stat upgrade and most early quests fail on Strength or Agility. See [Annexes and Crafting](/systems/annexes/).
Should I delay stables to chase secret knights?
Stables tier 1 unlocks horses that fix the Goose Quest and the Beast Hunt forks. Most secret knights need Intendancy tier 2 by Cycle 12, not stables — keep stables in your third slot.
Did Patch 1.0.9 rebalance annex costs?
Yes. Alchemy tier 2 dropped ~10% and forge tier 2 dropped ~5% on August 13, 2026. See [Patch Notes 1.0.9](/updates/patch-1-0-9/).
When should I save for the Throne Room?
Save starting Cycle 25 if you want the Throne Room unlocked before the Cycle 45 ending branches. See [Golden Key Guide](/guides/golden-key/) and [Endings Guide](/guides/endings-guide/).
