Sovereign Tower Act 1 Best Route Guide

Groveshire vs Gavault, preparation targets, and Dragon Knight checklist before the Act 2 gate

Act 1 Best Route Guide

The Act 1 decision between Groveshire and Gavault is Sovereign Tower’s first meaningful branching point. Neither path is strictly harder or easier — Groveshire favors diplomacy and Wit-heavy checks, while Gavault rewards martial strength and combat stat assignments. The right choice depends on your knight roster, your sovereign archetype goals, and whether you are chasing specific secret knights. This guide gives you the preparation targets that work regardless of branch, then the decision framework for choosing between the two.

Read this before committing to a branch. If you have already chosen, use Act 1: Groveshire or Act 1: Gavault for branch-specific walkthroughs.

Universal Act 1 preparation targets

Whether you take Groveshire or Gavault, these numeric targets represent community-verified thresholds for a clean transition into Act 2. Hitting them does not guarantee a smooth Act 2 — but missing them guarantees pain.

TargetValueWhy it matters
Gold reserve400+Act 2 annex upgrades, emergency repairs, travel costs
Merchants standing20+Opens mid-game trade and courier contracts
Nobles standing15+Prevents early noble hostility during Act 2 transitions
Scholars standing15+Library and research unlocks in Act 2
People standing10+Prevents riots that cascade into merchant/noble instability
Allied county1 minimumAct 2 county routes require at least one active alliance

These are minimums. Higher values give more flexibility in Act 2 but are not required for the main path.

Groveshire — when to choose it

Groveshire is the better Act 1 choice if:

  • Your starter knights skew toward Charisma and Wit — Angelica, Gwendan, and Gideon are strong early Groveshire fits.
  • You want the Wolf or Rufus — the Beast Hunt and Groveshire forest territory share thematic territory.
  • You prefer slow-burn political management over direct martial confrontation.
  • You are targeting the Kind or Wise sovereign archetype — Groveshire naturally rewards measured, consultative choices.

Groveshire’s signature challenges:

  • Diplomacy checks that require Wit or Charisma at thresholds starter knights may not meet.
  • People and Mystics pressure — forest regions care deeply about both factions.
  • Delayed combat power — Groveshire builds strength through alliances, not raw knight strength.

The Act 1: Groveshire walkthrough covers step-by-step routing.

Gavault — when to choose it

Gavault is the better Act 1 choice if:

  • Your starter knights skew toward Strength and Agility — Goberto and Ursula are strong early Gavault fits.
  • You want maximum combat versatility — Gavault opens martial quest chains that Groveshire’s diplomacy focus does not.
  • You are targeting the Tyrannic or Audacious sovereign archetype — Gavault’s martial content rewards bold, confrontational choices.
  • You want a faster-paced early game with clearer immediate feedback on assignments.

Gavault’s signature challenges:

  • Combat stat thresholds — early Act 1 quests can require STR 8+ when your roster is still learning.
  • Nobles pressure — Gavault’s martial focus can anger People if you lean too hard on noble-aligned choices.
  • Lower diplomatic flexibility — some Groveshire solutions are not available in Gavault.

The Act 1: Gavault walkthrough covers step-by-step routing.

The Dragon Knight preparation checklist

The Dragon Knight quest arc is Act 2’s first major gate and the true test of your Act 1 preparation. It is not optional — you must complete it to progress. The preparation window begins in Act 1.

Before attempting the Dragon Knight, confirm you have:

  • At least 6 knights on the Round Table — the quest typically needs 4–6 active knights.
  • Armor fully repaired on knights likely to be assigned — combat failures can mean armor-death.
  • At least one knight with STR 10+ — Dragon Knight quests consistently require Strength thresholds.
  • At least one knight with AGI 8+ — agility affects combat initiative and dodge chance.
  • Gold reserve of 400+ — emergency repairs and last-minute forge upgrades eat gold fast.
  • One allied county from your Act 1 branch — Dragon Knight requires a staging ground.

The Beat the Dragon Knight guide covers the actual quest mechanics.

The Groveshire/Gavault decision timing

The branch choice presents itself after Act 0 establishes your court and Arlin introduces the two regional problems. You have one cycle to decide — but the decision is not immediately irreversible if you have not committed to a major audience promise.

If you are uncertain, prefer Groveshire for a first clear. The diplomatic focus is more forgiving of stat gaps — a knight with 8 WIT can solve a Groveshire problem; a knight with 7 STR cannot solve a Gavault combat problem.

Both branches eventually converge. The Full Campaign Structure guide shows where the two paths meet in Act 2 and Act 3.

Secret knights and Act 1

Regardless of branch, three secret knights are accessible during Act 1:

  • ChesterGoose Quest, audience-triggered, available in both branches.
  • Sparky, Rufus, or SilgurBeast Hunt, Round Table card, available in both branches.
  • BrunhildaRebellion Walkthrough, requires Demon rewind to day 3, intersects both branches.

Do not sacrifice Act 1 stability for secret knights. A failed Act 1 that leaves you with 200 gold and three knights with 30% armor is a worse starting position for Act 2 than a clean Act 1 with no secret recruits.

What changes in Act 2 regardless of branch

Both Groveshire and Gavault converge at these Act 2 transition points:

  • Round Table expands from 6 to 8 slots — more assignments available, more knights to manage.
  • County alliances become active — Groveshire allies and Gavault allies both feed the alliance system.
  • Act 2 murder plotline begins — regardless of branch, the Tower murder mystery triggers.
  • Dragon Knight gate — the preparation you built in Act 1 is tested here.

The Act 2 Walkthrough covers Phase 3’s opening in detail.

Act 1 teaches you which kind of ruler you want to be. Choose the branch that matches the sovereign you want to become.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Is Groveshire easier than Gavault for a first playthrough?

Groveshire is generally more forgiving because diplomacy checks (Wit/Charisma) are easier to satisfy early than combat checks (Strength/Agility). However, both paths are completable with the starter roster.

Can I change my Act 1 branch after choosing?

Branch changes require Demon rewinding to before the choice point. There is no menu toggle. Plan ahead using this guide.

What is the minimum gold I should have before Act 2?

Community testing suggests 400+ gold as a safe minimum. Lower reserves force difficult choices between repairs, annexes, and quest participation.

Does my Act 1 branch affect secret knight availability?

No. Chester, Sparky/Rufus/Silgur, and Brunhilda are all available in both Groveshire and Gavault. Branch only affects the flavor and order of content.

When does the Dragon Knight become available?

The Dragon Knight quest arc begins in Act 2, but preparation starts in Act 1. Failing to prepare adequately in Act 1 means expensive补救 in Act 2.
