Sovereign Tower Griffin Taming on the Isle of Basalt

Griffin taming is the Isle of Basalt scout that turns a flying creature into a mount, sets the griffin_mount_obtained_first_quest flag, and feeds the Steam achievement How to Train Your Griffin. It is not the same beat as hiring Ari. Wild Wits split the county: one audience leaks the forgotten brother, another card asks you to tame a griffin on a four-cycle deadline. Curve Games’ launched campaign still uses Charisma-heavy scouting rather than a combat minigame.

Score still starts at −10 for presence math. Two knights is not optional flavour — sending one tanks the party-size term before Charisma even applies. Read Quest Scoring if a “perfect” Angelica still fails.

Cute Creature and Flying Creature traits matter. Knights who like animals (Angelica’s Animal Lover, some secret recruits) pick up the +1 that a pure CHA dump might miss. Do not send Hunt-haters into a tame if their dislike also hits Flying Creature — check Attributes after Alwena’s daily scan (Intendant).

How to play the four cycles

1. Accept the Basalt griffin petition when it appears. Missing the deadline burns the first-quest flag; the follow-up isle card may never spawn.
2. Assign two knights who together clear CHA 11 / MAG 4 / WIT 3 on averages, not a single superstar plus a donkey.
3. Feed favourite meals the morning they leave — kitchen crumbs are +0.5 score (Cooking).
4. Leave them out for the three-cycle assignment. Do not yank the party mid-flight unless an emergency truly outranks the trophy.
5. On success, the Old Griffin mount appears. That mount is exactly what later non-horse summit flags want — including Kutnar Derby.
6. Play the Isle of Basalt 2 follow-up when it lands; it continues county politics that also gate Ari’s gossip.

If you fail, Demon-rewind the accept night rather than living with a dead bird and a locked trophy — Time Rewind. Patch 1.0.8 reduced weaker-stat penalties and raised overlevel bonuses; a slightly over-level Charisma pair is kinder after that build (Patch 1.0.8).

Ari’s recruit line is “do you know anyone who would sell me a griffin?” during the Rorik / Gotfrig succession, often needing Merchant standing around 20. That dialogue does not replace the taming card. You can own Columbus and still never have tamed the Old Griffin — two different birds, two different Steam lines.

If you want both, do the tame on a quiet four-cycle window, then spend the 25 funds when the guilds leak the brother’s name. Seat cap still applies.

Steam highlights How to Train Your Griffin among the 75 achievements. Community catalogs treat the first successful tame (the flag above) as the toast. There is no code. Do not open Codes FAQ looking for a spawn; finish the card.

Common failures

• Sending one knight because “Charisma 15 should be enough.”
• Ignoring MAG 4 / WIT 3 and watching a diplomat get clawed.
• Letting the 4-cycle timer collide with Ligia’s 3-cycle lamp or King Slayer.
• Assuming Ari’s Columbus counts as the tame flag.
• Using the Old Griffin on a Hunt dislike week and wondering why affinity tanks.
